| Color Education We are pleased to present an ongoing educational program of mini courses in color. These color courses are one of the many ways the Color Association works with its members to educate them in all aspects of color. All members receive detailed digests of each seminar via email. Please see our calendar for a current schedule. Color Psychology in the 21st Century was presented by Meg Miele, Assistant Professor of Psychology and Assistant Chair of the Social Sciences Department of the Fashion Institute of Technology. Professor Miele's specialty is color. "I love crayons," she said as she led the attendees of the workshop through a series of color exercises, including the Luscher Color Test, a psychological and physiological test devised in 1947 that has proven amazingly accurate in determining within minutes a subject's personality traits and psychic stresses. Stating that human beings can perceive some 350,000 colors, Professor Miele said two elements affecting color psychology today are the general population¹s growing color savvy, which is especially true of children, and the aging of the population. We are learning more about color in the 21st century, Professor Miele concluded, because we are looking at computer monitors, often creating color with light in many warm light tones. Asher Derman, principal of Green October, spoke on Green Design. Dr. Derman is an environmental consultant who participated in the design of the head offices of Scholastic, Inc. and Conde Nast Publications, New York City's first "green" high rise, a 1.6 million square foot office tower at 4 Times Square. According to Dr. Derman, 40% of the US population suffers from "unhealthy" buildings. As a result "green" design awareness is gaining consideration. Curiously enough, residential, rather than commercial spaces are more likely to be "unhealthy." Among the pollutants in a home are animal dander, finishes and cosmetics, mold, mildew, and high humidity. Fashion Color Patterning from Around the World, presented by Barbara Arlen. Issues that Ms. Arlen discussed: coloring for domestic markets and overseas; capturing various demographic markets; differentiating American and European color; how materials and fabrications affect color appearances; why different countries use color differently. Mimi Cooper of Cooper Marketing presented a workshop on Color Marketing. Mimi Cooper is a principal of the Cooper Marketing Group and is known internationally for her expertise in the use of color for marketing. Those attending received a copy of Mimi Cooper's book, COLOR-SMART, Pocket Book Div., Simon & Schuster, 2000. Among the topics covered were the signals that colors send, using color's positiveness and feature reinforcement, and applying color marketing principles to different segments of American and global markets. |
